THE #1 CAUSE OF ALL TEENAGE DEATHS ARE MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS (US Dept of Health and Human Services, May 2010)

In the Northeast, a leading cause of teen accidents is deer.  When a deer jumps into the road, our instinct is turn and brake hard.  Result?  Braking-induced oversteer. In other words, we fly off of the road into a ditch or a tree.  Driver’s Education approach?  A PowerPoint slide explaining to “turn into a skid.”  But what does that mean?

The approach we take at the Teen Race Camp at MMC? High-speed drills with sudden obstruction and avoidance exercises. Braking exercises.  Campers will explain why the instinctual response induces oversteer, what it means, what it feels like, and know – and practice until it becomes muscle memory – the correct reaction. Because on the road, there’s no time to think.  It’s everything your teens didn’t learn in Driver’s Ed, but unlike Driver’s Ed, they’ll love every minute.
