Alexandra McKoy is a 16-year-old NYC native who is fresh out of MMC’s Performance Driving and Competition Camps where she received the well-earned MVP Award. This young lady was well suited for this distinction, not just for her on-track and in-car performance, but also for her off-track enthusiasm. If you’ve spent any time around Alexandra, you know that she possesses an infectious energy and beaming smile, and it’s evident she wants to have a good time, regardless of what she’s doing.
Alexandra first came to MMC in 2019 on what was a very memorable visit. “I walked into the clubhouse and saw a machine that could dispense any drink imaginable, and as a 13-year-old, it was a dream come true. But after my first go around the north track in a Miata, I knew it was true love. After that, it just kept getting better, from cross karts, go-karts, and the entire track in a Porsche!”
She finally became a member at MMC in April of this year. As her interests in performance driving and cars began to grow, she realized that MMC would be an ideal place to improve her driving skills and connect with a community of like-minded individuals.
Alexandra’s love of cars goes beyond driving them on track. A favorite pastime is designing car liveries for my favorite drivers and teams. She has just entered her junior year at Avenues: The World School where she’s been accepted into the Mastery Program. Through this self-designed program she’ll choose to study graphic design, specifically for the contemporary automotive industry. After high school she aims to study industrial design. “I find myself drawn towards car design, and anything that makes a positive impact on the future of the automotive industry. There’s an enormous buzz around the future of vehicles.”
Q&A with Alexandra McKoy
If not at MMC and not in school, where might we find you?
Nowadays I’m often traveling between the city and our place in the Dominican Republic. During the day, you can find me in the mountains along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, either driving a UTV or my enduro motorcycle! At night, I’ll be in bed watching Formula 1.
Who is your idol or who is your greatest hero? Why?
The honey badger, Formula 1 racer Daniel Ricciardo. Admittedly, he hasn’t been performing as well recently, but I’m a huge fan of his incredible positivity and relentless dedication. He’s also a funny guy, and I admire his ability to keep smiling through thick and thin. Focusing on positivity is a powerful trait to have.
What is your dream car?
Too many to call, but I’m intrigued by the Nissan GT-R. Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear UK said its V6 engine is superb, and its handling of tight corners is extraordinary. I also love that it’s a four-seater: I can bring my whole family to the racetrack!
Three things you loved about Performance Driving Camp?
Number one favorite thing from Performance Driving Camp is to have gone karting on the skid pad. That was an insane experience, and drifting around the corners was unforgettably fun. I was flying. I also loved the crosskarts, and driving the Minis on the north track.
What was your best day of Performance Driving camp?
No doubt, the day we hopped in the PDK’s and got to practice driving the entire track. And I finally discovered what “PDK” stands for: “Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe.” Needless to say, the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebes were incredibly fun. That was the same day as the awards ceremony, and I am still so very honored to have earned the MVP award.
What was your favorite driving activity at camp?
I’ve mentioned all my favorite driving-related activities, so I’ll mention my other favorite activity, which was eating the chocolate chip cookies offered by the clubhouse. They were mouth-wateringly delicious.
Three things you loved about Competition Camp?
Competition camp was extraordinary. It was a lot like actual race school, and I had the absolute pleasure of doing it alongside some really cool people. It had a lot more on-track exercises, which I appreciated, but also I think the learning I did off-track was a blast, too. I was immersed in the mindset of racing, learning about the cars we drove as we drove them, and cracking jokes over the radio with our talented instructors. Finally, I enjoyed winding down by winning 50,000 tickets at the arcade at our hotel.
What was your best day of this camp?
The final day, when we had our race. I was thrilled and stoked to get out on the track and put everything I had learned to the test. My fellow campers put up a really good fight, and I’m proud to say I got my fastest lap on the south course during that race.
What was your favorite driving activity at Competition Camp?
I loved driving the course while doing our passing exercises in the Porsches, those dependable and powerful cars that could reach up to 170 mph. I also loved driving the tiny Jeep we won at the nearby arcade down the hallway of the hotel at a mind-boggling 2 mph!
For anyone who might feel intimidated about attending the camp, what would you tell them about your experience that might make them feel better?
Remember that you’re with seasoned, personable instructors: Stuart, Bryan, Taylor, Ben, Jason, Kris, Tommy, Trent, Josh, Chris and Dyke are dedicated to your safety and well-being every step of the way. We all have to start somewhere, and there’s no reason not to relax and take your time. Speed will come with technique. Take it one step at a time, and before you know it, you’ll be beating your best time. MMC is an incredibly supportive environment.
What advice would you give someone attending the camp?
I can’t stress this enough, go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep. It makes all the difference when you’ve been super-focused all day. Also, as Danielle was so good at reminding us, eat those vegetables!
What is the best and most useful skill you took away from the camps?
As much as I learned about driving, I really learned a lot about myself. I think self-discipline is my number one takeaway from camp. Mastering the mental game behind driving is the most important skill, and you can apply that to anything you pursue in life.
What surprised you the most about your progress and abilities during the camp?
I’m still amazed when I think about how much I’ve progressed. I had no idea how quickly my confidence could grow as a driver, especially considering that in the beginning, I was nervous to use the brakes to their full potential! By the final day, I was pumping them hard as I safely could, secure in my ability to push the throttle down all the way.
Anything else you’d like to add about your experiences?
Let’s continue the tradition of watching the movie “Cars”!
(Parenting Tip: If you want to keep a room full of teenagers off of their phones for a couple of hours, play the movie “Cars!”)
